What We’ve Been Up To

Hi there! It sure has been busy around here during the last couple of months! It’s hard to believe we’ll soon be crunching leaves under our feet and wrapping up in warm sweaters. Oh, by the way, my name is Susie. I’m one of Jen’s editing assistants, which means I get to see all of the beautiful images before the clients! You may see me posting on here from time to time. We hope to do a more full blog post on the weddings shortly. But for now the cameras are busy clicking away and our first priority is getting the photos in the hands of our clients.  So enjoy these sneak peeks!

First up is a sweet couple,  Win and Kristen, whose engagement pictures Jen shot around the campus of the University of Michigan and the hospital where they met. They will be getting married next June!

A precious couple, Daryn and Kira, are pictured here with their firstborn girl, Emmry. Jen had the honor of shooting not only the maternity pictures but the birth and newborn pictures as well!

Lauren and Erwan’s wedding was held outdoors at the bride’s home on Grand Traverse Bay; the groom’s French heritage added a unique twist to the beautiful decor and spirited atmosphere. Alicia Caldecott was the mastermind behind this extraordinary event as well!

And what’s a crazy summer without Jen’s two boys, Ethan and Carter being their goofy selves!  These boys took time out of their busy schedules to help Jen test out her new light modifiers. They might be another reason why her hands have been full lately!

Equipment for Sale!

It’s that time of year — cleaning house to make room for bigger and better things!!  If you know of anyone looking to upgrade or buy some backup gear, feel free to send them my way.

Nikon D2Xs Body:

Purchased in the fall of 2006. Refurbished last year, only 679 actuations since then.  Looks and acts like new minus the small rubber grip on the bottom that had started to peel off (fixed with black electrical tape–unnoticeable).  Paid $5,000, asking $1,000.

Nikon D3 Body:

Purchased in the summer of 2008.  This is my current work horse boasting 111,213 actuations.  I’m planning on upgrading to the Nikon D3s for the addition of video and expanded ISO for the rare wedding that occurs in the dark (or a giant cathedral in LA with no windows and medieval chandeliers).  It’s still going strong with only a couple of minor scuffs on the bottom of the vertical grip.  Paid $5,000, asking $3,500.

Nikon 14-24mm 2.8

Purchased fall 2009.  This lens is known for being the crowning achievement of Nikon’s glass collection.  It’s simply not my style.  I’ve only used it a few times.  Like new.  Asking $1500.

Email jen@jenkrollphotography.com or call 616-334-5569 for more info or to see the gear in person.  Thanks!

Giving YOU

Giving of ourselves is a culture that we embrace around our house.

My husband, Jay, learned it early on when he moved furniture and tended the yard of an elderly couple who in turn treated him with snacks and conversation.  The friendship that was formed lasted through the death of the husband and more recently, the passing of Evie, the wife.  One of the rare occasions I’ve seen Jay cry.  This experience led him to create a volunteer ministry while in college, become a cub scout master, and ultimately as his career in working for TheCommon.org.

I grew up as the recipient of other people’s generosity.  We had Christmases where “Santa” did indeed visit our house, only he couldn’t fit down the chimney so the gifts were left in large plastic bags outside of our door.  I know now that “Santa” was likely our church who knew we wouldn’t have anything else under the tree so they made the delivery late Christmas Eve.  Always plagued by never ending used car repairs, I remember the day my mom picked me up from school {a VERY rare thing} in an almost brand new car that someone at the church had given her.  Rather than feeling like the recipient of a handout, it seemed more like taking a deep breath… space to dream that anything was possible.  Right or wrong, as a child I felt the weight of the world being lifted.

This evening has been spent tying loose ends for our trip to Port-au-Prince in a few days.  Looking back over the journey to get to this point, it really started in that backyard and under a Christmas tree long ago.  Learning to care for people and be cared for starts when we’re young.  Ethan, at seven years old, knows that dad’s job is to help people help other people.  Those values are being reinforced in Cub Scouts on numerous service opportunities. He knows why I go to the hospital to photograph babies who won’t go home.  Ethan and Jay play cards with an elderly man with Asperger’s Syndrome every other week to help keep him company and offer their friendship.  He knows we’re going to Haiti and to him it’s no big deal.  This is what we do.  Often in our brokenness, we take care of each other by getting our hands dirty {<– good read}.

Of course, you don’t have to go to Haiti to be a life changer.  There are so many needs in our backyard.  Outside of donating used clothes at the Salvation Army drop box, it’s hard to know where the tangible needs actually exist.  This is why TheCommon.org is such a powerful tool… it connects those needs with your abilities.  If you: attend church, are a YMCA member, involved with Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, work with a non-profit, part of a community or township board, attend college, work at an office, or simply have a group of friends, then TheCommon.org will be a tremendous asset in developing a culture of caring in you, your family, and your community.

Stories from our extended community… take a few minutes to view this clip.  Then share it.  :)

The Christmas Gift

Disclaimer:  We took our Christmas tree down on New Year’s Eve.  But it did snow here today so it’s a perfect opportunity to dive into a bit of Christmas nostalgia with this great video that Dan and Stephanie sent me!!  They decided to get their parents copies of their main album for Christmas.  And to give me new marketing material, they video taped them opening the album!!  Not really, but it sure did make me giddy!  Dan is currently deployed in Iraq for his third tour but was able to watch his parents opening their album online (thus the tipping of the laptop).  Love technology!  I have a hard time grasping being away for a year with our current capabilities, I can’t fathom how our soldiers did it in wars past.  Thank you Dan for continuing to serve and thank you Stephanie sharing your hubby with our country and for video taping such a sweet Christmas memory!  Special thanks go to Dan’s brother for the additional commentary and thanks to Dan’s parents for not throwing the book when it wasn’t what they expected!!  ;)

*my shameless plug comes at 5:16* ;)
